About Project

Kinship is a social networking app that helps moms and moms‑to‑be find local, like‑minded women who are in the same stage of motherhood, and turn those connections into real friendships.

iRoid Solutions built a complete ecosystem, including UI/UX, native iOS and Android apps, a web app, backend APIs, and an admin panel, to support intimate chat groups, local matching, and both virtual and in‑person interactions in a safe, supportive community.

Project Description

Motherhood can feel isolating, especially when you’re navigating pregnancy, newborn life, or toddler chaos without a local “village”. Kinship was created to solve exactly that: connect moms who are experiencing similar joys, challenges, and milestones, and give them a simple space to talk, share, and meet.

Inside the app, moms and moms‑to‑be sign up, share a few details about their life stage, and get matched into small local chat groups based on due date or child’s age. These are not massive forums; they’re intimate circles where conversations feel personal and manageable.

Our team used Swift for iOS, Jetpack Compose for Android, and Node.js/Express with MongoDB on AWS for the backend, with a responsive web app for broader access. This stack powers matching logic, group chats, notifications, and admin controls, while keeping data secure and performance smooth as Kinship expands to new cities.

Business Goals

Kinship’s main business goal is to become the go‑to app for moms looking for “their people”: a trusted platform that replaces random Facebook groups and overwhelming forums with curated, local, and life‑stage‑specific communities.

By focusing on small groups, local proximity, and subscription‑based access after an initial trial, Kinship aims to build a sustainable membership model that supports continuous feature development and high‑quality community management.

For moms, the goal is simple: feel less alone, find genuine support, and create friendships that move from chat to coffee dates, playdates, and mom nights out.

Features

Local, Life‑Stage Matching

Kinship matches moms and moms‑to‑be into small groups based on due date or child’s age, so everyone in a chat is going through similar milestones at the same time.

Intimate Chat Groups

Instead of giant, noisy communities, Kinship keeps group sizes under a set limit, making it easier to build real relationships, have meaningful conversations, and plan meetups.

Virtual & In‑Person Connections

Moms can chat online, share questions and advice, and then turn those connections into real‑life friendships through playdates, coffee meetups, and local gatherings.

Simple, Supportive UX

The app’s design is intentionally warm and uncluttered, guiding users from sign‑up to matched group with minimal friction, and keeping daily chat use light and intuitive.

Notifications & Group Updates

Smart notifications alert moms to new messages, group activity, and important announcements without overwhelming them, helping maintain engagement and trust.

Admin Panel & City Management

Kinship’s team can manage cities, groups, memberships, and moderation tools from an admin dashboard, essential for scaling to new locations while protecting community quality.

Trial & Subscription Model

New moms can explore Kinship free for an initial period, then continue as subscribers, supporting the platform and ensuring a consistent, high‑quality experience.

Secure, Cloud‑Hosted Infrastructure

Node.js, Express, MongoDB, AWS, and modern web technologies provide a reliable foundation to handle matching logic, chat data, and growth across multiple U.S. cities.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenges

Solutions

Building trust in a sensitive, personal space

Moms are cautious about joining new online communities, especially when sharing details about pregnancy, children, and location.

We emphasized safety through small group sizes, clear privacy messaging, and gentle onboarding, while Kinship focused on human‑centered copy that highlights support and understanding rather than generic social networking.

Matching moms meaningfully, not just quickly

Poor matches could lead to inactive groups or mismatched expectations, hurting retention.

Matching logic prioritizes life stage and locality over speed, and the backend supports flexible rules so Kinship can refine matching as the community grows.

Keeping conversations intimate while scaling cities

As more moms join, it’s easy for groups to become too large or fragmented.

Admin tools enforce group size limits, allow city‑level oversight, and support creating new groups when demand increases, so each circle stays manageable and personal.

Balancing engagement with notification fatigue

Moms have busy lives; too many alerts can push them away.

We designed a notification strategy focused on meaningful updates, new matches, important messages, and key group events, while giving users basic control over what they want to be notified about.

Launching in limited cities while planning expansion

Kinship started in selected locations and needed an architecture ready for more markets.

City and group management were baked into the data model and admin panel from day one, so new regions can be added incrementally without restructuring the platform.
