About Project
Vathos is an intentional video journaling app that invites users to speak directly to the camera and capture their emotions, experiences, and personal growth over time.
iRoid Solutions helped bring this concept to life on iOS using SwiftUI and a local‑first data approach, creating a calm, minimalist space where reflection feels simple, private, and deeply personal.

Project Description
The idea behind Vathos is straightforward but powerful: when people see and hear themselves regularly, they become more aware of their patterns, beliefs, and emotional responses. Instead of typing into a traditional journal, users record short video entries, speaking honestly about what they’re feeling or going through.
Our role was to design and build an iOS app that makes this process effortless. With SwiftUI, we crafted a soft, pastel interface and clean layouts that guide users from opening the app to pressing record in just a few taps. The experience is intentionally simple, no complex menus, no distractions, just a clear path to self‑reflection.
Because privacy is central to journaling, entries are stored locally on the device, giving users confidence that their most vulnerable moments stay with them. Combined with smooth video capture, playback, and browsing, the app becomes a personal archive of growth rather than a social platform.
Business Goals
The primary goal for Vathos was to create a focused mental‑wellness tool that helps users build a sustainable habit of reflection, without subscriptions, social pressure, or overwhelming features.
By positioning Vathos as a free, intentional video journaling experience, the client aimed to reach people who might not connect with traditional text journaling or meditation apps, but still want clarity, self‑awareness, and emotional balance in their daily lives.
From a product perspective, the goal was to prove that a minimalist, local‑first iOS app can deliver real value in the Healthcare & Fitness space, setting a foundation for future features like optional prompts, streaks, or guided reflection, while keeping the core experience pure and distraction‑free.
Features
Intentional Video Journaling
Users record video entries that capture words, tone, facial expressions, and body language, creating a richer record of their emotional journey than text alone can provide.
Calming, Minimalist Interface
SwiftUI powers a soft, pastel design with minimal controls, helping users feel safe and grounded as they open the app and start speaking to themselves.
Local‑First Entry Storage
Journal entries are stored locally on the device, prioritizing privacy and giving users full control over their recordings without cloud dependency.
Simple Recording & Playback Flow
A single tap starts recording; once finished, users can immediately review, name, and revisit their entries later, making reflection a quick daily habit rather than a long process.
Entry Library & Timeline
Over time, users build a visual timeline of their reflections, allowing them to look back at past entries, notice changes in mood or mindset, and appreciate their progress.
Designed for Self‑Compassion
The app’s messaging and microcopy encourage honesty, gentleness, and curiosity instead of judgment, turning each session into a moment of self‑care rather than self‑critique.

Challenges & Solutions
Challenges
Solutions
Making journaling on camera feel safe and non‑awkward
Many people are hesitant to see themselves on video, especially when talking about vulnerable topics.
The app uses a calming visual style, warm copy, and a simple, predictable flow so users quickly get used to speaking to the camera as if they’re talking to a trusted friend, themselves.
Balancing simplicity with enough structure to build a habit
Too many features can overwhelm users; too few can make the app feel shallow.
We focused on a core loop, open, reflect, record, revisit, and kept optional enhancements subtle, allowing future updates like prompts or streaks without cluttering the initial release.
Handling video storage while protecting privacy
Video files are large and sensitive, and users need confidence that recordings won’t be exposed or misused.
A local database approach keeps entries on the device, with clear messaging about privacy, and efficient file handling to manage storage while preserving quality.
Encouraging emotional growth without turning into a clinical tool
The app sits between wellness and self‑help; it shouldn’t feel like therapy, but it should still support meaningful change.
We emphasized gentle reflection language, “Live. Reflect. Grow.” and avoided diagnostic or clinical framing, positioning Vathos as a daily companion rather than a replacement for professional care.
Delivering a smooth video experience on a minimalist, SwiftUI stack
Video capture and playback must feel fluid, especially for users recording regularly.
Careful integration of AVFoundation with SwiftUI views, plus performance tuning around recording, saving, and playback, ensures the experience stays responsive and reliable on supported iOS versions.
